There Is No “Away”: The Free Shelf at USTU

When you throw something away, it doesn’t disappear. It goes somewhere, and that somewhere is usually a landfill. At Urban Soil / Tierra Urbana, we try to keep that “away” as small as we can, and one of our favorite tools for it is a white hutch in our lobby.

How the Free Shelf Works

The idea is simple. When a resident has something they no longer need, they set it on the free shelf. Another resident who could use it takes it home. No money changes hands, and nothing goes in the trash.

Over time, the shelf fills with a little bit of everything: buckets and baskets, kitchenware, a handmade ceramic bowl, clothing, a big water jug, and whatever else our neighbors are ready to pass along. Something that sat unused in one apartment becomes something useful in another, and it often starts a conversation along the way.

Broken? Don’t Toss It

Not everything on the shelf is perfect, and not everything we own stays perfect. If something breaks, hold onto it. You can bring it to the next repair cafe, where volunteers help fix things instead of replacing them. A repaired lamp, a mended jacket, or a rescued appliance is one more thing kept out of the landfill. Follow the repair cafe on Instagram to find out when the next one is happening.

Take a Book, Leave a Book

You’ll also find our little free library on Bimini Pl. Grab something to read, and if you have books that have finished their time on your nightstand, pass them along to the next reader.

Why It Matters

Our community is rooted in the idea that we take responsibility for each other and for the planet. The free shelf is a small, everyday way of living that out. Sharing instead of discarding saves resources, reduces waste, and builds the kind of relationships that make a community strong.

If you visit us on our public tour on Saturday, November 14, from 10 AM to 12 PM, you’ll get to see the free shelf in person. And if you’re not a resident, you might try starting something similar in your own building or neighborhood. All it takes is a shelf, a sign, and a few neighbors willing to share.
